In my first session Graham explained how the brain works and how it uses templates to subconsciously guide us.. for instance driving a car.. unfortunately, my brain had faulty or unrequired templates.. basically it was telling my nervous system that riding my horse on the road or skiing down a mountain was placing me at extreme risk of dying not the pleasurable experience I was looking for.. so together we set about fixing those templates.
I started to notice the difference quite quickly.. but it was the people around me that were also amazed... I had tried for a year to build my confidence to the point where I could ride my horse out on the road on my own.. but I had failed.. yet, after six or seven sessions with Graham I did it!! My confidence soared.. I became a better, happier version of my self, more relaxed and less stressed out when things just weren't going 'right'. I can honestly say that my sessions with Graham have been life changing for me!” emmajdental.com |
“I went to Graham when I was feeling very low and suffering from anxiety and panic attacks. At the time I couldn't see how to get back to feeling like myself again and being happy. After only a couple of sessions with Graham he had helped me to make some massive changes and I was starting to feel more positive and my anxiety seemed to be fading. Now after less than 3 months I feel like my old self again, I'm happy, confident and I haven't suffered any more panic attacks. I hadn't had any kind of therapy before so I was very nervous but Graham always made me feel at ease during the sessions. I will certainly recommend him to everyone I know!”
Teenager with Autism.
"At a time when a bad situation kept getting worse, I came across an advert for Solution Focused Therapy with Graham. I commend myself (frankly) for following my hunch as my son's life is not the only life that changed since our contact with Graham. As a mother of an autistic teen, living in area where there was little, if any support for his specific needs, and a waiting list at CAMHS a mile long, I was quite truly at breaking point.
My son appreciated Graham's logical approach; Graham quite simply makes sense and in that sense lay the answer to many issues otherwise never cleared. Holiday times were never a pleasure for us. Out of routine with changeable days increased my son's anxieties and with a return to school always hanging in the background, anxiety tipped the scale. A return to school was no respite as anxiety would tip into depression. Twice he was hospitalised for clinical depression along with exacerbated states of OCD.
This holiday? I'm smiling as I type these words. This summer has been .... a holiday! No routine - no schedule - no plans and NO BREAKDOWN. I have Graham's easy-going, sensible manner and the seeming magic that he has worked to thank. My son - no longer 'existing' and working against the grain is a different lad altogether. This has of course had a knock-on effect on the quality of my life.
Do I recommend Graham? Wholeheartedly: he changed our lives.
I am happy to answer any questions you might have regarding my son's progress with Solution Focused Therapy. Contact Graham for my contact details. Thank you, Graham !

'Depression'
"I have suffered with 2 or 3 episodes of depression since a marriage break up and loss of twin babies, and then a relapse last year when I subsequently retired from a job I loved because I couldn't take the pressure anymore and had lost all confidence in my abilities. My GP had prescribed anti depressants, referrals to the mental health service which seemed great at the time, but as soon as the service discharged me, I felt just the same. I went back to my GP asking for help earlier this year, and was told she could do no more and I should try the private sector. Hence my telephone call to Graham McDowell and thank god I did.
It hasn't been plain sailing all the way, but after the first session, and with the help of the CD, I immediately felt better and knew this was a man and "therapy" I could engage with and trust. No more sitting and going over the same old problems, this was looking at the solutions for the first time. No one had explained before in simple, understandable terms why I felt as I did, but Graham did, and it made perfect sense. I went from being miserable, depressed and at rock bottom to "mentally magnificent" in a few months. I haven't yet reached 10 on the magnificence scale, but I am a good 9 to 9 1/2 most days. I hesitate to say 10, but I know that one day I will be and I'll know it when it comes, until then I am happy to keep working at it. The most important thing I have learnt is that I have choices, it sounds simple, but when you "get it" it changes your life for the better. "

'Bipolar, Depression'
“My son had suffered with anxiety and depression for many years, with mood swings and anger management problems. A Psychologist at the hospital diagnosed him with bipolar disorder but it seemed we had to keep waiting for treatment. I contacted Graham McDowell and he began working with my son straight away. Within a few weeks my son was starting to feel positive, his ability to cope and relate to others was also much better.
After two months or so with Graham he had still not been given any NHS drug treatment but he was now transformed; he was once again going out with friends, exercising, he was calm, able to cope and was even happy! He then saw his NHS psychologist again, who told him that he would not now prescribe any medication as he no longer needed it!

'Depression, Anxiety'
"Confidence — that’s what was missing, and that’s what’s returning. I say returning — I’m not sure I ever had any. Just weeks ago, I was depressed, anxious, hugely daunted by so much. I knew I had potential — I knew that much, but realising even 1% of it seemed Herculean.
You can have 1,000 people cheering you on, recognising your successes, telling you that you can, but while you’re saying you can’t, you’re finished. I was exhausted by self-doubt and self-recrimination, hadn’t eaten or slept properly in a long while.
To sleep soundly again — what a blessing. A good night’s sleep and already I feel readier to face the day. Follow that up with a proper breakfast and I’m starting to feel like I’m the one who’s Hercules. I can’t believe I’d forgotten the basics of survival — to eat and sleep, to have your body as fit as possible. And that takes discipline, of course it does — to listen to the relaxation CD each night, to eat breakfast, to want to change, but by God! I wanted change so badly.
And that change is tangible now. I’m daring to dream, to embrace life, to listen to new music, explore new literature and play the guitar again. It’s early days for me — just weeks into this change, but I recognise a momentum gathering. And when that momentum is mine, comes from me, that’s unbelievably rewarding. From there, and with the growing confidence I spoke of, it feels like a fuse has been lit.
Yes, I walk down the street, acknowledge people, stop and ask how acquaintances are, and that’s lovely — to feel part of the community, to laugh and joke, and for it all to be so genuine. A giddying effect for a self-confessed misanthrope.
But then, change suddenly feels good, the future is mine again, not some long wait of missed opportunities. Why cling on to misery like a some worn comfort blanket?
It’s back to this confidence — and with it, a burgeoning self-esteem, a semblance of control wrested back, because I’m providing my own answers to life’s challenges, they’re coming from within. I do have a future, and it will be as rewarding as I want to make it."

"I first went to Graham McDowell to see if he could reduce my increasing seasickness. I had just bought a new boat to sail from Plymouth but the sickness was making things unpleasant. I gave him just three weeks – a tall order by any yardstick. He was immediately understanding and his therapy, which included talking about my attitude to things which lay ahead and some relaxation sessions did the trick. I have not had a whiff of seasickness since!
I went back to him later to tackle my longstanding problems with anxiety & memories of a difficult childhood and unresolved grieving. He showed me how to deal with my destructive thoughts and I have noticed I am now far more relaxed in everyday matters. I have left behind my negative feelings about my past and have resolved my grieving.
I feel more contented than I have ever been and deal easily with the present knowing I now have the ability to deal with anything in the future! Graham, I cannot thank you enough for your help!” Doctor P.T.
I was so stressed out with work it got to the point where I couldn't cope anymore. I'm not the type of person to ask for help and would not have even considered Hypnotherapy. I told a good mate how bad I was feeling and he told me he'd also had similar problems and been to see Graham. I was really surprised at just how "normal and common sense" the sessions with Graham were. I have to be honest that I was even more surprised that within just a few weeks I was coping much better and that now 3 months on, not only can I cope, I dont feel stressed and in fact I feel really happy. The really weird thing, my work hasn't changed. I've changed!" T.J.

"When I first went to see Graham I had a really bad sickness phobia. It was really controlling my life, I was very anxious, I had no confidence and I wasn't a very happy person.
After my sessions with him I now know how to control my phobia, I have a lot more confidence and I am now a very happy person. I don't know how to thank him, seeing him has changed my life. IT DOES WORK! P.G.
Young Mum with Anxiety & Depression.
“I first came to Graham when I was at a low point in my life. My self esteem and confidence was at an all time low and I was feeling very negative about my life. During our sessions Graham explained to me about how our brains work and how knowing this we can change negative and damaging thought patterns and take control of our lives. We also learn positive reinforcements whilst gently relaxing. Three months on and I am feeling really positive about life. I now have the confidence to go out and make the changes to help me move forwards and get the life I want. I have learnt to control my mind and not let it control me!” S.P.
A Grandmothers relief.
"I took my 17 year old Grandaughter to see Graham as she had a serious phobia that was taking over her life. After a few weeks with Graham not only has he helped with her phobia she has become more confident and happier. She is like a different person. I don't know how to thank Graham. I love the new Grandaughter i now have!" J.D.
